Keratoplasty

The cornea is the eye's clear front window, focusing light so you can see -- when it becomes scarred, swollen, or damaged and can't be healed by other treatment, a corneal transplant (keratoplasty) replaces the diseased cornea with clear, healthy tissue from a human donor. All donated corneas are carefully tested for safety before use. Depending on the case, only the front and middle layers may be replaced, only the inner layer, or -- for more advanced disease -- the entire cornea.
